Goodbye London

So a week (and a bit) ago I left London…

I now live in Southampton, and am rather happy about it. I now have a garden, more space to live in, cheaper rent/beer/food/etc. and most of all it only takes me 15-20 min to get into work most days (as opposed to the 1:30-1:45 it used to take me).

It is wierd any time I go back to London, but I am sure that will wear off after a while.

After 4 years in London, there are still plenty of things I wish I had done while there. Go the more theatre shows, more museums, more galleries etc. I will probably see more of London, now that I have left it, than I did while i was living there as I will make the most of any trip to the capital (you have to with the prices of train tickets).

Firefly & Serenity

When Serenity came out in the cinema’s, I had not idea what it was or where it came from. Talking to people at work, I was told I had to see it, but that I also had to watch Firefly first. So I borrowed the dvd’s (as I do not think it was shown on TV on this side of the pond) and watched them with my girlfriend. By the time we finished we missed Serenity in the cinema, but I just got it on DVD. The whole lot is awesome.

The basic story is a odd mix of futuristic space travel crossed with a western feel. Both the series and film follow the crew of Serenity - an ageing space craft led by Captain Malcom ‘Mal’ Reynold. The crew are all incredible characters, and each has enough depth to keep you not just interested but begging for more. The crew pick up two fugitives and they form a large basis of the story as they run from the “alliance”.

The series got cancelled after 11 episodes on Fox, in the US, which is a real shame as it is the best TV I have seen in a very long time. Director Joss Whedon produced magic with the series and the film, and it is far better than his previous works (Buffy and Angel)

The film, Serenity, fills in some of the storyline at the end of the episodes, but will stand on its own just fine. It is a shame that there will probably not be any more episodes of Firefly, but hopefully the next time something this incredible is created we won’t have to rely on TV companies to air it and keep it running as direct internet TV is not that far off.

DVD’s vs. Cinema

I have bought several DVD’s recently. Spiderman & Spiderman 2 (for £6/7 for both from play.com), Batman Begins and Serenity (both for £5 each from asda). I don’t mind missing them in the cinema too much. I get annoyed with cinema’s that don’t (can’t?) focus films properly, and having been a projectionist myself I cannot understand why (it is not that hard!). Why should I spend the same amount of money (or more to take my girlfriend) on going to see a blurry film, when I can buy the DVD for the same price a short while later? Not to mention that if I want any popcorn/snacks in the cinema, I either have to smuggle it in or get robbed by the prices the cinema’s charge.

I cannot help but feel that it would be a better investment to buy a pc projector and just get all my films on dvd. Then I can watch them again with friends whenever I want!

Stella Awards

Time once again to review the winners of the Annual “Stella Awards.”

The Stella Awards are named after 81 year-old Stella Liebeck who spilled hot coffee on herself and successfully sued McDonald’s (in NM ). That case inspired the Stella Awards for the most frivolous, ridiculous, successful lawsuits in the United States

Here are this year’s winners:
