Thanks Graham. I found the middle-clck vertical maximise now exists in gnome, and found the "expose" type window selection (its called scale and has mouse corner options).

I am still running mixed (kde console, because the gnome one feels wrong and amarok because its fantastic). My "post-it" notes are still in the kde notes because I can't be bothered to try and convert them.

I still use KDE on my other machines, but time will tell what I will choose next time I reinstall a machine.

A good read Ant, thanks, a nice balanced view.

I have now moved away from KDE too for a number of reasons, I find some of the gnome stuff is fantastic but still miss certain KDE features like the middle-click to maximise a window vertically. Under KDE I ran a mix of gtk and qt apps and always thought if I ran gnome I'd probably ditch KDE apps altogether. The reality is I still tend to run a mix and just use my favourite apps whatever the toolkit their written in.

I do find things seem to work better in Gnome due to the greater support interest in the community and for the same reason software updates are a little more forthcoming too. I completely agree though, any long time KDE user moving to Gnome will despise the complete lack of options you get. The more you use Gnome though, the more you'll find out you can change things how you want you just have to install a missing config app or find the setting somewhere outside the rather basic options GUIs.
